RVN: France – the town hall is burning
17 October. Interior Ministry: 550,000 people. Organisers: higher.
More than 1,200 arrests. Around 150 injured officers.
Most marches stayed calm.
The edges did not.
In Limoges the historic town hall burned. The roof partly collapsed.
In Lyon the tourist office went up in flames.
In Marseille the town hall was entered.
In Rouen, Paris, Lille and Nice shops were looted: among them Swarovski, Lacoste, Sephora, Micromania and Fnac. Windows out, shelves emptied.
Groups in black, faces covered, barricades of tables and containers.
Police that withdrew in places and later returned.
In Rouen citizens who call themselves patriots confronted the rioters when the line gave way.
Smaller marches in Milan, Bologna, Brussels, Lisbon and Albania over higher prices for groceries and rent.
Same edge: masks, stones, fireworks.
What stands
Not a school pupil with a banner.
Groups taking over the street, buildings burning, shops being emptied.
And in places citizens removing the barricades themselves because the police withdrew.
OIM way out
Do not turn the whole march into a riot.
Do put the images side by side: where the police withdrew, who removed the barricades themselves, which buildings burned.
A state that leaves the street to whoever throws hardest forces the rest to handle it themselves.
That is not order. That is a gap.
Whoever wants to close that gap starts with the count, not the label.
Question for you
How many cities have to show the same image before it is no longer an incident?
