RVN: Ilhan Omar – the van at the door

A few weeks ago: who she is, the questions, the papers https://openinternetmanifest.org/social-posts/en/day-151-rvn.html.

Today: Homeland Security Investigations at her home near Washington. Early in the morning. A judicial warrant, obtained by the Justice Department. Boxes going out. Part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.

No arrest. No indictment. A van, though.

What was already on the table

Part 1 noted three things.

An ICE investigation into possible immigration fraud, or a recent one.
A FOIA refusal with the standard phrase about “enforcement proceedings.”
A swing in the financial disclosures: first millions via her husband’s winery, later revised down to a maximum of about $125,000. An accounting error, the office said.

The marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi (2009–2017) remained what it was. Allegation: her brother, to keep him in the country. Denial. No DNA, no ruling.

What is added

Fox writes, citing a source, that the search concerns immigration paperwork her late father filed when she was a child. Justice confirms the warrant and the investigation. Not the subject.

Omar: abuse of power. Intimidation of a political opponent. She has done nothing wrong. Congress is in recess. She is running for reelection.

A warrant is not a conviction. A refusal citing “enforcement proceedings” is no longer an empty form either. That sentence now has an address.

The split

Weaponization is the shop window. Every search of an opponent gets that word.
A judge who signs is the till. He does not sign on a tweet.

Whether the file holds up is for the investigation to show. Until then two sentences stand side by side. She: nothing done. Justice: ongoing criminal investigation, boxes in the van.

OIM way out

Do not run ahead of the charge. There isn’t one.
Do not turn the search into theatre because the person is well known.

Do: warrant, agency, what comes out of it.
The FOIA sentence from part 1 and the van from part 2 belong in the same piece.

Question for you

If a refusal says “enforcement proceedings” and a search follows…
which do you believe first, the denial or the warrant?
