NOS: schoolchildren. Classes too full, too few teachers, bad buildings. 250,000 people out. 1,800 schools blocked.
That is the demand. It holds as a start.
The count next to it holds too. Since late September: more than 6,600 arrests, almost all of them minors. 761 injured officers. 215 injured pupils, 89 staff. A 15-year-old in Lens lost his hand to a stun grenade. 24 schools burned or ransacked. Tear gas in Paris, Lyon, Marseille.
A classroom that leaks does not set a school on fire. And it does not tag a monument.
What the headline leaves out
In Strasbourg, Palestinian flags and Antifa flags walked in the same march. Reuters has the picture. Urgence Palestine had already declared October a month of revolt. La France Insoumise moved in at once.
Nick Shirley is in Paris with the camera the paper does not send along. Graffiti on historic facades. Antifa tags. Dressed in black, face covered. The same picture as the Floyd riots: a demand in front, a bloc behind that takes the street.
Who pays that bloc is another question. A tag is not a bank statement. A pattern is not a coincidence either.
The Yellow Vests have announced 17 October. Three layers in one street. Education. The radical left. A flag that has nothing to do with a boiler.
The pattern
First the reasonable demand. It is real. Schools in France are bad.
Then the hijack. Rioters, fire, projectiles, tags on stone older than the demand. The interior minister says it himself: in many places the march has been hijacked.
Then the frame that sticks. Schoolchildren. Police violence. As if the flag, the tag and the fire are a side issue.
Amnesty counts the officer’s force. The facade does not count.
Floyd also started with a name. It ended with a shopping street. Same order. Different city.
OIM way out
Do not wave the demand away. A broken school is a broken school.
Do not turn the fire into “youth frustration”.
Do not invent a funder where only a tag is standing.
Do: who blocks, who sets the fire, which flag comes along, what is on the wall.
Three layers. Three sentences. Not one headline.
Question for you
If the demand is a classroom and the march carries a tag and a Palestinian flag…
which story do you read, the headline or the footage?
