The United Nations was meeting that same week in New York. Xi did not go. In 2015 he did both.
On television it sounded big.
Trump: the farmers will be happy.
Xi: calm between the two great powers.
What was actually agreed is smaller.
What is on the table
The United States and China had a temporary pause in their trade war. That pause was due to end in November.
It has now been extended to 10 January. Two extra months. After that they meet again: November in China, December in Miami.
They published lists of goods on which import tariffs may come down.
From China to America: toys, Christmas baubles, small appliances.
From America to China: corn, milk, medical equipment.
Soybeans — important for US farmers — were not on China’s list.
When the tariff actually falls is not firmly dated.
Also: they will talk about artificial intelligence.
America says China will buy US coal. That was not always in the Chinese text.
Taiwan — the island China treats as its own — did appear in the Chinese readout. Xi wants America to be “prudent”. Taiwan was not in the American press release.
