The Netherlands is strong. Purchasing power is being repaired. The housing shortage is being tackled. Migration is coming under control. Patience: not everything at once.
That was the tone. The king read it out. Heinen set down the briefcase. The ritual did what it always does: radiate calm.
What the week before already said
The Jetten cabinet had only just kept the budget upright. A minority. D66, VVD, CDA.
Then “not everything at once” sounds different.
Asylum, housing, nitrogen, box 3: the same sentence.
Patience can be wisdom. It can also be the only majority they still have: delay.
The wallet
The CPB estimates that the median household will be 0.1 percent worse off next year.
The cabinet says: we improve that by 0.2 percentage points relative to the earlier forecast.
That is not a plus.
That is: less minus than August.
Opposite that sit choices that do appear in the table.
Higher rates in the first and second brackets — in part as a “freedom contribution” for defence.
Defence grows to well over 28 billion.
The health-insurance excess to 400 euros. The premium expected up 12.50, towards 169 euros a month.
At the pump, 1.4 billion in excise duty off.
Nibud reads the payslip more bleakly than the cabinet: most households go backwards, among other things through higher income tax. Two institutes, two sentences. Both belong in the same piece.
On housing it stays slow: 425 million a year to housing associations, transfer tax for investors from 8 to 7 percent, and no promise that there will be a house tomorrow. Diagnosis: urgent. Treatment: later.
How it works
Budget Day does not lie. It translates.
Hard choices become reasonableness. Delay becomes wisdom. A smaller minus than the previous forecast becomes “doing something about it.”
Anyone who only hears the Speech from the Throne hears government.
Anyone who lays the table beside it sees negotiation to the edge.
OIM way out
Do not mock the coach.
Do set the words next to the figures.
Read the Budget Memorandum.
Read the CPB.
Refuse to take the ritual for the outcome.
Question for you
If the wallet on average does not move forward and the house does not come faster…
what exactly has been earned again?
