RVN: LG – you bought the screen, they claim the room
Gamers Nexus and Level1Techs put an LG smart TV on the meter. Packet captures, not a column.
What stands firm: the TV scans the home network. Phones, watches, printers. Devices that never talk to the screen. Plus nearby Wi-Fi, signal strength, location. What you watch, including via HDMI and other inputs. That goes, among other places, to LG Ad Solutions.
LG does not entirely deny that. A network scan is, they say, a smart-TV feature. ACR – recognising what you watch – is standard in the industry.
The microphone part is the dispute.
Researchers captured microphone audio while the screen appeared off, including offline. File stored locally. Upload once a network is back. Voice commands as plain text in logs. After a wake word, residual audio hung on for seconds.
LG says: no ambient conversations. Only if you press the voice button or have “Hi LG” switched on. Wake word local, then gone.
That is the press release.
The capture is the other story.
Both belong in the same sentence until someone reproduces or refutes it.
Own the glass
Inside LG Ad Solutions it sounds different.
We own the glass. The living room. The household across screens.
You paid for a panel.
They sell reach.
The point
Filming a civil servant in the street is a row.
A microphone and a network scan in the living room are standard, until someone measures.
Whoever controls the data controls the space.
As long as that data goes to an ad stack you cannot check, you are a user. Not an owner.
The product is not the screen.
The product is the household behind it.
OIM way out
Do not throw every TV into the street.
Do open the chain.
Which microphone lives in standby.
Which data to which server.
Can you really switch off ACR and voice, or only the tick box.
Local what can be local.
IoT on a separate network.
Otherwise: a dumb screen and a stick that you switch off.
Verification first.
The press release after.
Question for you
Is your TV on the same Wi-Fi as your phone?
And who do you think “owns” the living room?
