RVN: ON out of the system – the plug and the rules
Minister Letschert wants to withdraw Ongehoord Nederland’s provisional recognition.
The heaviest tool. The plug is not out yet: first a response, then a final decision, then possibly the courts.
The Hague’s case: structurally failing the rules.
The media regulator. Sanctions. Conflicts of interest.
And a broadcast in which a Hitler clip appeared, with commentary the broadcaster itself could no longer carry. The editor-in-chief resigned.
NPO asked for withdrawal. Earlier the same NPO said the legal ground was thin.
That turn belongs in the file. Not beside it.
Two frames
One camp: at last. Public money is not a playground. Anyone who lets Hitler sound as if he “did some things well” does not belong on a public channel.
The other camp: the rules are the knife. Other broadcasters stretch them too. ON is the outlet the cartel dislikes, so it gets thrown out.
Both can hold a piece of truth.
A Hitler quote on a public broadcast is not “a different tone”.
A system that steers one broadcaster for years and ejects another is not a neutral car wash.
What it is
ON is not a martyr merely because it is being thrown out.
The system is not a church merely because it says “journalistic standards”.
It is a licence plus tax money plus a D66 minister.
Anyone who may not check that mix gets a moral ending: extreme, irresponsible, done.
OIM way out
Do not canonise the broadcaster.
Do not make the minister a truth commission.
Do follow the chain:
Which rule was broken how often.
Which sanction was on paper.
Why NPO first said “insufficient ground” and then asked anyway.
What ON may still do outside the system, on its own channel, without a compulsory subscription.
Public money requires open rules.
Open rules require that they weigh the same for everyone.
Question for you
When a broadcaster is thrown out…
do you look first at the broadcast, or first at who holds the plug?
