RVN: The stretching of concepts – why admitting it is so expensive
Yesterday the letters.
Today not a new list of words, but the layer beneath.
It is not only words that stretch.
People stretch with them.
And once you have gone along, you often cannot go back without giving up something of yourself.
The extra step
A stretched concept is convenient.
It shuts down discussion.
It only becomes truly stubborn when people have invested in it themselves.
Then it is no longer about the definition.
Then it is about who you were when you said yes.
Ask someone whether they had a covid vaccine, and you increasingly get irritation instead of an answer.
Not because the question is rude.
Because an honest answer puts the earlier story under pressure: I did it for others, I trusted the institutions, I belonged.
The same with the later added layer of the letters.
Anyone who went along politically or socially with the hype does not only have an opinion.
They have corrected friends, written off colleagues, sometimes taken children into a frame.
Admitting that LGB and T are not the same then costs more than a word. It costs face.
Closer to home
It does not have to be world news.
A colleague from Groot-Ammers.
His younger brother is at agricultural college, training to be a farmer.
The emphasis there already lies heavily on climate and sustainable enterprise, less on the trade itself.
At home it sounds like: don’t get so worked up, you can’t do anything about it anyway.
That is the second blow.
First the meaning of the word farmer changes.
Then resistance is declared pointless.
Anyone who names that does not only hit a frame.
They hit people who have already invested in that frame, or in the idea that resistance makes no difference anyway.
Same pattern as with the letters.
Same pattern as with the jab.
First the frame.
Then the investment.
Then the impossibility of coming back.
What breaks
Not only the precision of words.
Also the ability to correct course.
Anyone who turns doubt into character no longer gets a debate.
Only camps.
And camps do not need a hash verifier. They need loyalty.
OIM way out
Do not demand a confession.
Do not open with “you were wrong”.
Do pull the terms apart, even when that is uncomfortable.
Vaccine policy is not a moral membership.
LGB is not T.
A farmer is not a climate manager, unless he chooses that himself.
Precise questions without character assassination.
Open data instead of moral blackmail.
Room to change your mind without handing in your entire past.
That is what we can do about it.
Not win the narrative.
Keep the exit open.
