RVN: Ilhan Omar – who is she and what is going on?
Ilhan Omar has been a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Minnesota since 2019. She was born in Somalia, fled as a child and became an American citizen in 2000.
In the Netherlands she is little known. In the United States she is well known – mainly because of two recurring dossiers.
1. The marriage
Between 2009 and 2017 Omar was married to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Critics have claimed for years that he is her biological brother and that the marriage served to keep him legally in the United States. Omar firmly denies this. There has never been DNA evidence or a court ruling that substantiates the claim. There is (or recently was) an ICE investigation into possible immigration fraud.
Last week President Trump shared a Just the News article in which ICE refuses to release FOIA records on this investigation, stating that disclosure could interfere with “enforcement proceedings.”
2. Finances and fraud investigations
In Minnesota there have long been investigations into large-scale fraud with federal subsidies in the Somali community, including around daycare and food programs. Omar’s name regularly appears in those dossiers, without her having been convicted herself.
Her own financial disclosures caused a stir in 2025. First the papers reported household assets of $6 to 30 million (mainly through companies of her husband Tim Mynett, including the California winery eStCru). Later those figures were revised down to a maximum of approximately $125,000. Omar’s office spoke of an accounting error.
What is established
There is an ICE investigation (or recently was) into possible immigration fraud.
There is a FOIA refusal with the standard legal phrase about “enforcement proceedings.”
There is a striking fluctuation in the official financial disclosures of a sitting member of Congress.
