RVN: David Morens admits – hiding records is no longer a conspiracy theory
On 18 August 2026 David Morens pleaded guilty in federal court in Maryland.
The former senior adviser at NIAID (2006–2022, under Anthony Fauci) admitted to conspiracy to commit offenses and to defraud the United States.
What he admitted is simple and hard.
Morens and his co-conspirators agreed to conduct communications about the EcoHealth Alliance grant (bat coronavirus research) and the origins of COVID via his personal Gmail account rather than his official NIH email. The goal: to keep those messages out of FOIA requests and the Federal Records Act. They exchanged non-public NIH information, worked on restoring the grant, and back-channeled information to a senior NIAID official. Morens also accepted gratuities, including bottles of wine.
This is not interpretation. It is stated in the guilty plea and the accompanying statement of facts from the Department of Justice.
The emails that had already been made public fit seamlessly. Morens himself wrote that he knew “how to make emails disappear after I am FOIA’d” and that he deleted things he did not want to see in the New York Times. He deliberately used private channels to circumvent public access.
Fauci himself has not been charged. In the documents he is referred to as “Senior NIAID Official 1”. That fact alone shows how thin the line sometimes is between the individual and the institution.
What this shows
When a senior official systematically keeps records out of public view, “trust the science” or “trust the institutions” is no longer an argument. The only thing left is verification: open systems, open records, open code.
That is exactly the common thread of the Open Internet Manifest.
Not boycotting. Building structures that do not depend on the good character of the people working inside them.
Question for you
When senior officials admit to hiding records to evade FOIA…
how much trust do you still have left in “official” statements from the same period?
