Dutch Travel Maniac (Tom) met an 82-year-old man in Düsseldorf: Dieter.
A man who had worked hard his entire life and paid his taxes. After a divorce and the death of his ex-wife he fell into serious financial hardship. Out of shame he didn’t beg in his own town, but travelled to Düsseldorf instead.
Tom was deeply moved. He started a donation campaign.
In a short time more than €67,000 came in.
Not from governments, funds or NGOs.
From ordinary people. Thousands of ordinary people.
Tom withdrew the money and handed it over personally, in cash, to Dieter. Stacks of bills on the table. Dieter could not hold back his tears.
And then he said it:
“Someone sent me angels.”
No press conference.
No subsidy application.
No intermediary taking a cut.
Just people who saw that an old man who had done his duty now needed help… and they gave it.
This is the exact opposite of the system we so often criticise.
Here there is no narrative, no selective rules, no “criminal circuit” when the treasury doesn’t benefit.
Here it is simply: We the People.
On a blessed Sunday evening this is the kind of story we should share.
Not because it solves everything.
But because it proves that humanity and solidarity from the ground up are still very much alive.
