Create your first Pixelfed account
Pixelfed is the decentralized alternative to Instagram: share photos and stories without an algorithm controlling your feed, without ads, and with full data portability.

Step 1 – Choose an instance (server)
Good starters:
- pixelfed.social – large general community
- pixey.org – privacy-focused
- pfed.eu – European and active
Or browse more instances at fediverse.observer.
Step 2 – Create an account
- Go to your chosen server’s website
- Click Register or Sign up
- Enter a username, email address and strong password
- Verify your email → done!
Step 3 – Set up your profile
- Use the same profile picture and bio as on Instagram
- Mention your old Instagram handle in your bio (e.g. “Formerly @yourname on Instagram”)
- Pin a welcome photo with caption: “Hello Pixelfed! I’ve switched from Instagram.”
Step 4 – Follow people
- Use Fedifinder to find your old Instagram followers (if they’re already on Pixelfed)
- Search manually by name or handle
- Follow them — they will get a notification
Step 5 – Post your first photo
Upload a photo, add a nice caption and post!
You are now outside the fence of Instagram.
