Messaging apps without Big Tech
Big Tech messaging apps (WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, Facebook Messenger) are convenient, but they come with surveillance, central control and lock-in. Here are better alternatives.
Recommended apps (2026)
| App | Encryption | Decentralized | Best for | Platforms | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Element (Matrix) | E2EE | Yes | Groups, communities, daily use | Android, iOS, Desktop, Web | Easy |
| Signal | E2EE | No | Maximum security, simple | Android, iOS, Desktop | Very Easy |
| Session | E2EE | Yes | Strong anonymity | Android, iOS, Desktop | Easy |
| Threema | E2EE | No | Paid, no phone number required | Android, iOS, Desktop | Easy |
| Simplex | E2EE | Yes | No user IDs, maximum privacy | Android, iOS, Desktop | Medium |
Recommended starting point: Element (Matrix)
Why Element?
- Truly decentralized and federated
- End-to-end encrypted by default
- Large communities and bridges to other networks
- You can self-host or use public servers
Quick start:
- Download Element from element.io or app stores
- Create account on a server (e.g.
matrix.org,chat.mozilla.orgor a privacy-focused one) - Save your recovery key!
- Add contacts via their Matrix ID (
@username:server.com) - Start chatting or join rooms
Pro tip: Use bridges to stay in touch with people still on WhatsApp (temporary solution).
Other strong options
- Signal → Best security + usability balance (but centralized)
- Session → No phone number, onion routing
- Simplex → No persistent user IDs at all
Migration tip:
Put in your old WhatsApp/Telegram status: “I’m now on Element: @yourname:matrix.org” and share your new contact.
You no longer need to give your data to Big Tech to stay in touch with friends and family.
