Create your first Mastodon account and migrate from X/Twitter
Mastodon is not a replacement for Twitter — it is better. You choose your own server, your data truly belongs to you, and you can always move.

Step 1 – Choose an instance (server)
Good starters:
- mastodon.nl – Dutch community, beginner-friendly
- fosstodon.org – focused on open-source and tech
- chaos.social – active, free and creative
Or browse more instances at instances.social.
Step 2 – Create an account
- Go to your chosen instance
- Click Sign up or Create account
- Enter a username, email address and strong password
- Verify your email → done!
Step 3 – Set up your profile
- Use the same profile picture and bio as on X/Twitter
- Mention your old handle in your bio (e.g. “Formerly @yourname on Twitter”)
- Pin a welcome post: “I’ve moved to Mastodon! Follow me here.”
Step 4 – Follow people
- Use Fedifinder: enter your X/Twitter handle to find Mastodon accounts of your followers
- Search manually by name or handle
- Follow them — they will get a notification
Step 5 – Bring your old posts (optional)
- Download your Twitter archive using Twexport or Twitter’s own tool
- Use tools like Crossposter to import posts (limited)
Step 6 – Start posting
Post your first message:
“Hello Mastodon! I’ve switched from Twitter. Who should I follow here?”
You are now outside the fence.
