Create your first Lemmy account
Lemmy is the decentralized alternative to Reddit: forums (sublemmies), communities and discussions — without a central owner or algorithm controlling your feed.

Step 1 – Choose an instance (server)
Good starters:
- lemmy.ml – large general community
- beehaw.org – friendly, well-moderated, positive vibe
- lemmy.world – very large, lots of communities
Or browse instances at join-lemmy.org/instances.
Step 2 – Create an account
- Go to your chosen instance
- Click Sign Up or Register
- Enter a username, email (sometimes optional) and strong password
- Answer any registration question (anti-bot measure)
- Verify your email if required → done!
Step 3 – Set up your profile
- Use a recognizable profile picture and bio
- Mention your old Reddit username (e.g. “Formerly u/yourname on Reddit”)
- Pin a welcome post: “Hello Lemmy! I switched from Reddit.”
Step 4 – Find and follow communities
- Search for your old subreddits (e.g.
!technology@lemmy.world) - Use sub.rehab for a list of Reddit → Lemmy alternatives
- Subscribe to communities across different instances
Step 5 – Make your first post
Post in a community or create your own sublemmy.
You are now outside the fence of centralized platforms.
