Create an account on Fosstodon
Fosstodon is a Mastodon instance with a strong focus on open-source, technology, privacy, and free software — perfect for developers, makers, and privacy-conscious people.

Step 1 – Go to Fosstodon
Go directly to fosstodon.org
Step 2 – Create an account
- Click Join or Create account
- Choose a username (e.g.
@yourname) - Enter your email address and a strong password
- Accept the server rules (Fosstodon is friendly but actively moderated)
- Verify your email → done!
Step 3 – Set up your profile
- Choose a recognizable profile picture (tech-related is nice but not required)
- Write a short bio (who you are and what interests you: open-source, privacy, Linux…)
- Optionally add your old X/Twitter handle in your bio
- Pin a welcome post: “Just started on Fosstodon — hello open-source world!”
Step 4 – Follow people
- Follow hashtags like #FOSS, #OpenSource, #Linux, #Privacy, #SelfHosting
- Search for names of projects or people you know
- Use Fedifinder to find your old Twitter/X followers
Step 5 – Make your first post
Post something about open-source, privacy, a tool you use, or why you switched.
You are now part of a community that values quality over quantity.
