Replace WhatsApp with Element (Matrix)
Element is end-to-end encrypted, federated, and you are not dependent on Meta.

Step 1 – Download Element
On phone and computer:
- Android: Google Play or F-Droid (recommended)
- iOS: App Store
- Desktop: element.io/get-started (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Web: app.element.io
Step 2 – Create an account
You don’t need to give a phone number:
- Open Element
- Choose Create Account
- Choose a homeserver:
- matrix.org (largest, easiest)
- or a more privacy-friendly one like chat.mozilla.org
- Choose a username and strong password
- Save your recovery key (very important!)
Step 3 – Add your first contacts
Ask friends and family for their Matrix ID (@name:matrix.org).
You can also search by email or phone number if they have enabled it.
Tip: Start with 3–5 people you trust.
Step 4 – Move groups and chats
- Create a new Room in Element
- Invite people via their Matrix ID
- Share the room link in your WhatsApp group
- Optionally: use a bridge bot (temporary)
Step 5 – Phase out or leave WhatsApp
- Put in your WhatsApp status: “I’m now on Element: @yourname:matrix.org”
- Only delete WhatsApp when you feel comfortable on Element
Result: Your messages are end-to-end encrypted, you can always switch servers, and your data is truly yours.
