Trump hits allies with tariffs — economy in danger! 📉 Export collapse, recession looming, NATO on the brink.
Reality:
Trump announced 17 Jan via Truth Social: 10% extra tariffs on all goods from NL, DE, FR, DK, NO, SE, FI, UK starting Feb 1 — rising to 25% on June 1 until Greenland is sold. Reason: solidarity with Denmark (incl. NL’s 1 soldier as “hands off” signal).
But risks ≠ disaster if we play smart:
- ASML as trump card 💻🔥 — EUV machines critical for US chips (Intel, TSMC US, Nvidia). Previous tariffs got exemptions because US depends on it (CHIPS Act). Likely deal again — tariffs would sabotage US own AI/security.
- Waterworks & delta expertise 🌊🏗️ — World leader in flood control, dams, climate adaptation. US coastal problems (Florida, NY) make this an export opportunity — Trump buys expertise if it delivers “America First”.
- Agritech & farmers 🌾🚜 — High-productivity, precision agriculture. US drought/climate issues → NL knowledge/machines export, tariffs push diversification to Asia/Africa.
- Port & logistics 🚢📦 — Rotterdam as EU hub. Tariffs may force more intra-EU/BRICS trade, or re-routing for US companies.
NL can benefit by:
✅ Negotiating exemptions (ASML model)
✅ Diversifying export
✅ Playing realpolitik: Trump respects dealmakers, not weakness
