Guide – Create an account on Fosstodon (tech and open-source community)
Fosstodon is a Mastodon instance focused on open-source, tech, privacy, and free software — perfect for developers, makers, and privacy-conscious people.

Step 1 – Go to Fosstodon
Go directly to fosstodon.org
Step 2 – Create an account
Step-by-step
- Click “Join” or “Create account”
- Fill in a username (e.g. @yourname)
- Fill in email and password
- Accept the rules (fosstodon is friendly but moderated)
- Verify your email → done!
Step 3 – Set up your profile
Make it recognizable
- Use a profile picture that fits you (tech-related or not)
- Bio: briefly tell who you are and what interests you (open-source, privacy, etc.)
- Add your old X/Twitter handle in your bio if you want
- Pin a post: “Just started on Fosstodon — hello open-source world!”
Step 4 – Follow people
Tips for the tech community
- Follow hashtags like #FOSS, #Linux, #Privacy, #OpenSource
- Search for project names or people you know
- Use Fedifinder to find your old followers on Mastodon
Step 5 – Make your first post
Post something about open-source, privacy, or why you switched.
You are now part of a community that values quality over quantity.
